Welcome to Judy’s League.
The rights of people with disabilities, or 1 in 4 Americans, are under attack. We need all hands on deck to save Section 504.
What is Judy’s League?
“Judy’s League” is a non-profit organization founded by Kaleigh Brendle, a pre-law student at Villanova University, that allows people of all ages and abilities to stand together and fight to save Section 504. Inspired by the courageous acts of Judy Huemann, a prominent activist in the disability rights movement in the 1970s, Kaleigh named this task force in her honor. Judy Huemann was known for organizing sit-in boycotts and the Capitol Crawl protest. The sit-ins were where people with disabilities sat at lunch counters until they were served, because at the time, they were segregated from society. The Capitol Crawl involved people with disabilities walking up the steps of the capitol building in Washington D.C. without wheelchairs, canes, and assistance from able-bodied individuals to prove that they should be included. These demonstrations caused Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to be passed.
The law was fine for over 50 years, helping disabled Americans be included (not segregated) in daily life. Students with disabilities could go to school and get the services they needed to be successful. Adults could get hired for a job without worrying about if their disability helped or hurt them. Buildings have elevators and ramps because of Section 504. There are so many more benefits of this law, but now in 2025, it could all be taken away. In a court case called Texas v. Bercerra, [1-2 sentence about the case here]. The department of Health and Human Services (HHS) wants to modify the part of Section 504 that deals with inclusion. If the Texas judge rules with the defense, then people with disabilities could be segregated again. Disabled Americans in Florida, Georgia, and Massachusetts are already being put back in institutions.
Kaleigh needs your help. Previous “Judy’s League” demonstrations included wearing orange and filming videos of what section 504 means to you, but more ways to help are coming soon. This decision can be heard any day now. Stop being frightened and start fighting for change!
